He has structured more than 200,000 American companies.
Thirty-four years building, buying and selling companies of his own — and since 2001, running the firm that has been incorporating and protecting American businesses since 1972. He sees the same expensive mistake in nearly all of them. For one hour, he is going to name it.

The full conversation
Only part of this becomes an episode. The rest exists only in the room.
You’ve worked with more than two hundred thousand businesses. What goes wrong in the same place every time?
The pattern that is obvious from where he sits and invisible from inside your own company.
Most owners set their structure up once and never touch it again. When does that get expensive?
The question nobody asks until a lawsuit, an audit or a buyer asks it for them.
You teach owners to build a company that works harder for them than they work for it. What has to be true first?
The difference between owning a business and owning a job.
First business at eighteen. What does success look like now that it didn’t then?
This show’s oldest question, and the one most leaders answer carefully. We ask for the real version.
And then we open the floor. Bring one of your own.
Meet your guest
Aaron Scott Young
Chairman & CEO, Laughlin Associates
Laughlin Associates has been incorporating, structuring and protecting American companies
since 1972. Aaron bought it in 2001 and has run it since — the structural partner behind
more than 200,000 businesses, from the country’s largest yacht broker to franchisees,
electrical contractors and medical practices.
He is an operator himself. He started a recycling company in Portland at eighteen, before
recycling was a business, and grew it to five thousand customers before selling; the proceeds
went into one of the city’s first cellular dealerships. Thirty-four years of founding,
buying and selling multi-million-dollar companies since.
Two hundred thousand businesses. He has seen how they get built, how they get sold, and how they come apart.
